Keflex (cephalexin) is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a range of infections in the:

• Throat
• Tonsils
• Lungs
• Nose
• Sinuses
• Ears
• Skin
• Bones
• Kidneys
• Bladder

In some conditions the medication is used as a preferred treatment, such as in cellulitis; in other cases, penicillin may be the preferred treatment, but those who have mild to moderate allergic reactions to penicillin may be advised to buy Keflex instead. The medication is in the same group of drugs as penicillin, however, and those with severe hypersensitivity to penicillin (or any other antibiotic) should use with caution, and may want to have an allergy test performed first.

Like all antibiotics, this medication is only effective against certain types of bacteria, and will have no effect on fungal or viral infections. Do not buy Keflex to treat an undiagnosed infections.

Getting the Most from Keflex

Keflex capsules come in 250 mg or 500 mg strengths. Capsules should not be opened or split; multiple capsules may be taken to complete a large dose (e.g., taking two 250 mg capsules to complete a 500 mg dose), but larger doses should not be divided (e.g., splitting a 500 mg capsule to take a 250 mg dose). Be sure to buy Keflex in the appropriate dosage strength.

Dosage depends largely on the condition being treated, and the severity of the condition:

• In the majority of cases, 250 mg is taken every 6 hours for 5 to 14 days, with the average duration of treatment being 10 days.
• In certain conditions, namely strep throat, bladder infections and skin infections, the typical dose is 500 mg every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days.
• In severe cases, dosage amounts may be doubled.
• Taking Keflex with food is optional.
• Capsules should be taken with a full glass of fluid.

In children, dosage is determined by weight; 25 to 50 mg of Keflex for every kg of body weight. There are some exceptions, however; dosage for children is best determined by a doctor.

When taking any antibiotic, remember to:

• Stay hydrated, especially if diarrhea occurs.
• Try taking capsules with food if nausea occurs.
• Take doses spread evenly apart and at the same times each day, to maximize presence of the drug in the body.
• Complete treatment even if feeling better, to prevent resistant bacteria.

Most people start feeling significantly better within a few days of starting treatment; it is normal for patients to be feeling completely fine for a few days before treatment ends. If the infection is not gone when treatment ends, or appears to be worsening during treatment, a doctor should be consulted.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with Keflex are mild and similar to those experienced with any antibiotic use:

• Nausea or vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Mild dizziness
• Mild fatigue
• Vaginal itching or discharge

The above side effects are not cause for worry unless severe.

Patients with a history of liver, kidney or bowel disease are at greater risk of experiencing severe side effects, and should not buy Keflex without first discussing treatment with a doctor.

Symptoms which warrant medical attention include:

• Swollen or painful joints
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes
• Confusion, disorientation, or hallucinations
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Unexplained rash or itching

Keflex may interact with a few other medications, reducing effectiveness, including metformin, probenecid, and blood thinners such as warfarin.
